Ann Montanaro Staples, director of the Movable Book Society, and Vice Chair of Friends of the Library Board will discuss the history of movable books and how complex paper engineering educates and entertains readers.

In  1993, while Ann was a librarian at Rutgers University, she founded the Movable Book Society, a non-profit,  international organization that promotes movable books. Ann is the preeminent authority on movable books and an avid pop-up book collector, with nearly 4500 titles in her personal library. She is the author of Pop-up and Movable Books: A Bibliography (Scarecrow Press, 1993), and Pop-up and Movable Books: A Bibliography, Supplement 1, 1991-1997 (Scarecrow Press, 2000).

The Rare Books Department of Special Collections will have a hands-on display of movable books from the 15th through the 21st centuries.

A silent auction precedes dinner and the presentation.

This is one of many books designed by Voitech Kubasta. The front and back cover illustrations are signed by Kubasta. A full-spread pop-up scene is at the end of the book. Printed by ARTIA, Prague, Czechoslovakia.
