Stranger & Stranger
Katharine Coles (b. 1959)
Salt Lake City, UT: Red Butte Press, 2016

From the colophon: “This collaboration evolved over a decade through artistic dialogue between poet Katharine Coles and painter Maureen O’Hara Ure. This imaginary collection was drawn from the inaccurate bestiaries created by New World explorers: North and South American, Asian, European, and particularly Byzantine art; and the co-creators’ own strange minds. Type is Alegria Sans and Roman. Papers are Arturo Cover and Mohawk Loop Antique Vellum. As the book’s content was a cooperative endeavor, so was its production. Faculty, staff, and students involved in the project were Marnie Powers-Torrey, production manager; David Wolske, designer; Crane Giamo, lead printer; Emily Tipps, binding coordinator; and assistants Hailey Bradley, Sara Jensen, Dana Knight, Allison Milham, and Brett Stanfield. This 2016 Book Arts Program imprint was produced at the Red Butte Press, a division of Special Collections, J. Willard Marriott Library, The University of Utah.” Edition of 26 lettered copies, signed by the poet and the artist. Rare Books copy is letter “F.”

Oh, please, “Lint in her bathrobe pockets and little
Sweets that have lost their wrappers.’
And it goes on: Oh, sweet, Oh, loss, —— just wrenching, lovely, aching and TREMENDOUS. With illustrations that are apt confections, perfection. I can’t believe it is I who must comment because no one more facile has to date. On the brilliance. The wistfulness, the truth in all of it. Words by Katharine. Paintings by Maureen. We are so rich in them. Go to Phillips Gallery Wednesday night the 27th and listen to the story of a fruitful friendship at 5:30 p.m. I so wish I could be there.
