For the Love of Art

Art and Art History graduating senior Nemo Miller recently made national and international news with her sculpture entitled “Cry Closet.” Exhibited on the first floor of the library during finals week, the art piece provided a safe place for students to express their emotions and deal with the stress of finals for a few moments.

Nemo’s sculpture is just one of several exhibitions hosted by the library each year. In fact, the library hosts exhibitions by artists in the community as well as students and faculty on campus. Artists apply for exhibition space through a proposal form and the library’s Exhibition Advisory Committee reviews each application closely to determine if there’s an appropriate space available and if the artist has provided required materials such as an artist statement.

Currently student exhibitions are located on levels one, two, and four. On levels one and two students enrolled in the “Sustainable Design Practice” class (taught by Carol Sogard in the Graphic Design Program) have a number of clothing design pieces on display. The name of the exhibition is Conscious Fashion. According to the exhibition description posted, the students: “… researched data compiled by Fashion Revolution.org and graphically interpreted the Fashion Transparency Index. This index is a review of 100 of the biggest global fashion brands, ranking how much they disclose about their social and environmental policies, practices, and impact.” This student artwork will be on display until June 15th.

The exhibition Booking a Brouhaha located on level four contains the work of students who completed Letterpress and Broadside classes taught through the library’s Book Arts Program. Booking a Brouhaha showcases the final editions of incredible bookwork of students completing classes this past spring semester. This work will be on display until July 6th.

Back to level one – two sculptures of students can be found in Katherine’s Courtyard, an indoor/outdoor area which is accessible from multiple entrances on levels 1 and 2. The two sculptures include “Whole Chair” by Madison Donnelly and “U Rock” by David Paul Thomas.
