A Step in the Right Direction

It’s the time of year when everyone is thinking about calorie content and exercise. But promoting health and wellness is a campus priority here at the U, and the library is serious about being a part of that initiative.

The new exercise work station will help students stay healthy and study well.

In the last year or so, the library has taken-on several health/wellness projects. There’s been a good deal of discussion about how sitting at a desk for long periods of time is unhealthy, so the library has placed some adjustable-height workstations on levels one, two, and three. Students can simply adjust the height of the table to their standing posture and change it to a sitting position whenever they like. There is also a cycling work station where students can spin while working on their laptop. Many staff offices also have adjustable-height desks.

During finals week, when the pressure is on, the library offers extra support to students. Therapy dogs and their handlers come to the library so students can take a break with a furry friend – an activity that is known for being a great stress reliever. On certain nights free food is offered along with supplies such as flash drives and pens.

Mom’s Café and Mom’s Pantry now have an expanded supply of healthy options such as gluten free snacks, veggies, and fruit. And the library will be partnering with the U’s fitness program (PEAK) to bring yoga classes to the library.

Recently some hip-looking red chairs (called Spun Chairs) that spin around were placed on level one. Ian Godfrey, Facilities & Operations Director, explains:

“We know that students have very long days and it’s important that they get small breaks in. These fun Spun Chairs allow them to jump in, spin, and have a laugh.”

And what could be better than that?
