When the University of Utah’s J. Willard Marriott Library opens the book on its 2016 Ski Affair Nov. 1 at the Little America Hotel, two indelible and burgeoning legacies that help make Utah a thriving world-class winter sports and recreation capital will be honored.

Legacy No. 1: That of the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games of 2002 in Salt Lake City that is under the stewardship of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation.

The foundation will receive the library’s History-Maker Award for maintaining three Olympic legacy venues: Utah Olympic Park in Park City, Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, and Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway. Through the strategic direction of the foundation, these unique Olympic venues have become recreational havens for local communities as well as incubators for elite winter athletes and continue to make history by hosting national and international competitions.

Legacy No. 2: That of Gary DeSeelhorst, the guiding hand at the controls of the renaissance of Solitude Ski Area in Big Cottonwood Canyon from 1977 until 2015 when he sold it to an affiliate of the Deer Valley Resort Co.  He and his wife, Betsy, and sons, David and Scott, nurtured Solitude through its most formative years and made the European-style ski village a premier destination resort. The resort was founded in 1958 by uranium miner-turned ski resort developer, Bob Barrett.

DeSeelhorst also spearheaded the effort to build a 17-mile long Big Cottonwood Canyon sewer line in 1990, which today serves the Brighton, Solitude, and Silver Fork areas. He will receive the library’s S.J. ‘Joe’ Quinney Award for his contribution to winter sports in the region.

More than 600 nostalgia-bent winter sports enthusiasts are expected to attend the annual fund-raiser for the Utah Ski Archives, which house the largest collection of ski/snowsports history in the country, including the records of the 2002 Games.

Activities will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception and silent auction, followed by a buffet dinner, the recognition of the honorees, and the screening of video footage related to the honorees. Other highlights will be:

  • Presentation of the Sue Raemer Award, given to a Ski Affair Advisory Board member who exemplifies the volunteer spirit of the Ski Archives’ late co-founder.
  • Opportunity drawings for two Rossignol ski gear packages (skis, boots, bindings, poles – valued at $5,400 each) and two seats with Park City Powder Cats and Heli Ski that will be given away to lucky holders of the tickets.
