Intro to the University of Utah’s Theatre Program and Digital Storytelling

Hello again from the Video Studio!

I have been working with the Theatre department for almost 5 years. In that time I have supported students and faculty on a very wide array of projects. From simple in studio monologues to support teaching and learning to multi camera location shots that developed into an ongoing Acting for the Camera class. I have had the chance to watch timid young freshman grow artistically to become competent and confident actors. I have received cards from graduates living in NY, LA, and abroad giving thanks for the support I provided. My favorite is when I hear graduated landing gigs from the videos on their reels! Not to stray too far so I will share my point. In the last four years I have had the opportunity to work with Denny Berry (Head of MTP) in developing a pedagogical practice by integrating visual learning tools into a weekly course for all MTP members. The videos are uploaded via Dropbox to a private YouTube where students review and reflect on performance. Denny also reviews the visual information to further develop an understanding of each students development. Here is a little PR piece I made for the program as they are hosting 1800 potential students at an annual conference.

Denny Berry, Assistant Professor and Head of the Musical Theatre Program, has this to say about the service: “As in any performance oriented activity, it is essential that a student can see where an instructor is encouraging attention and change. These video archives have provided that opportunity to our students. They have facilitated the teaching process as well as provided an archive of the student’s work. What started off as a lark for one class has become an essential tool for both the teaching and the record. The students have truly benefited from watching their progress over the semesters and have spoken about the positive effect this observation has had on the way they are able to target and effect change in their performance outcomes. By the time they reach their advanced level, they are, also, actually thrilled to be able to begin to assemble a video portfolio of work they would be proud to submit for positive casting opportunities.” Learn more at http://www.lib.utah.edu/services/digital-scholarship-lab/ Tony can be reached at 801-585-9780 or tony.sams@utah.edView the original article on theCreativity and Innovation Services Blog
