Working Toward Student Success

The fall semester is drawing to a close once again. The library, always filled with students, is even busier as students finish assignments and prepare for finals. Students may be at the library to study in a quiet area, meet with peers to complete a project, or seek help from librarians and staff. The kind of help students seek varies from needing assistance with locating information for a research paper to, well… the list is too long to include everything. But here are a few ways that we work with students – not just at finals but throughout the year.

Geospatial Information Systems (GIS): Justin Sorensen, our GIS Specialist, works with students to help them create map-based presentations from the data they have gathered. Recently Justin has been working with a graduate student on a project involving a walkable tour of Disneyland.

3D Printing and Artificial Intelligence (AI): Staff in the Creativity and Innovation Services (CRIS) group work with students on everything from creating video games to printing architectural models. Here’s an example of how three students in the multi-disciplinary design program are utilizing our CRIS department.

LEAP Learning Communities: LEAP is a program designed to help students transition into college successfully and our librarians teach classes in everything from research writing, to medical ethics, to how to cite sources.

Regardless of the level of technology or the complexity of the student’s need, the Marriott Library has the right people to help. It is what we call our commitment to student success and it is one more reason why the J. Willard Marriott Library is “All U Need.”
