Betye Saar began her artistic career as a printmaker. Sanctified was published on the occasion of the installation (April 22 – July 22, 1990) by Betye Saar and the theatrical production (May 3-6 and 10-13, 1990) by Ellen Sebastian (now Chang), Bay Area director and arts educator, based on the life of writer and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston (1901?-1960) and presented at the Temporary Contemporary of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Publication of this book was coordinated by Catherine Gudis. The book was designed and produced by Cheri Gaulke and Bonnie Thompson Norman at the Women’s Building, Los Angeles. Letterpress printed and handbound. Edition of five hundred copies.
