Associate Dean for Special Collections is Honored as a Fellow

Gregory C. Thompson, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Special Collections at the J. Willard Marriott Library, has been named as a Fellow by the Utah Division of State History. State History’s most prestigious honor is presented to individuals with long and distinguished careers in scholarly research and writing, or who have made an extraordinary contribution to state history, historic preservation, or archaeology.

Greg’s involvement with Utah history includes the American West Center, before becoming a University of Utah Archivist and adjunct professor. Greg helped develop tribal histories, archives, and oral history collections for 15 Western tribes. He published several monographs on the Ute peoples. Greg has essentially created some of the world’s most dynamic archives representing the western U.S., women, and ski and winter sports. His contributions of time and insights to historical associations and mentoring Utah historians have spanned decades.

Appointed by the governor, Greg served six years on the State History Board and held the title of Chair for one year. He was also named by the governor to the Utah Geography Names Committee, which is within the State Department of Heritage and Arts and State History.
